The cargo handling team at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai manages various electronic goods including mobile phones, computer components, industrial electronics, healthcare equipment, automobile parts, networking gear, solar cells, printers, and laptops. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, CSMIA processed over 43,000 tonnes of electronic goods in FY22, according to an official release by CSMIA.

Electronic items constitute a significant portion of imports at 8% of the overall volume. While top export destinations for CSMIA include Dubai, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Lyon, major import routes feature Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Singapore, and London.

In the domestic market, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, and Chennai receive substantial outbound cargo from CSMIA.

Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Blue Dart, along with other customer airlines, play a significant role in importing electronic items, mentions the release.

“The cargo is carefully categorised and stored in secure locations, adhering to pre-agreed standard operating procedures (SOPs) with customers. This prioritisation ensures safe and secure storage as well as reduced turnaround times for handover and delivery. During this period, CSMIA’s key account coordinators provide continuous updates to customers on the status of their cargo, ensuring transparency and peace of mind throughout the process.”

CSMIA is also planning the development of a new state-of-the-art cargo terminal, aimed at further enhancing the efficiency and safety of transporting goods, the release added.
