Carousel Logistics has launched a new airside facility at Birmingham Airport to streamline its cargo handling operations, according to an official release from Carousel Logistics.

The cargo hub triples Carousel’s previous handling capability and is projected to reduce up to 50,000 miles of road transport per year.

“Our new facility at Birmingham Airport will allow us to handle even greater volumes of cargo within the same tight time window,” says Andrew Lowery, UK Managing Director, Carousel Logistics.

“Strategically located near the M42 and M6 motorways, Birmingham International station, new HS2 links, and our electric rail freight partner Varamis Rail, this investment will dramatically improve line haul times and cut carbon emissions.”

Previously, cargo unloaded at Birmingham Airport was transported to Carousel's facility in Coventry before continuing its journey.

The opening of this new facility eliminates the need for this extra step, allowing goods to be sorted and shipped directly from the airport to their final destination, the release added.

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, the in-night logistics specialist has also invested in new low-emission equipment at Birmingham Airport. This includes electrically powered forklifts and belt loaders, ground power units running on Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel instead of diesel, and a new fleet of electric vans.
