Cargo operations at HKG will be disrupted by Super Typhoon Ragasa
The airport will remain operational, however, flight operations will be reduced as airlines announce cancellations.

Hong Kong said its airport will remain open, but operations will be limited. Yeung Tat-wing, Director of Service Delivery at the Hong Kong Airport Authority, stated that flight operations would be sharply reduced after 6 p.m. (1000 GMT) on Tuesday, with most flights affected on Wednesday.
Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flag carrier, in its travel advisory, said that due to Super Typhoon Ragasa, several flights scheduled to arrive at and depart from Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday, 23 September, and Wednesday, 24 September, have been affected. The airline has cancelled three long-haul departures from Hong Kong on the morning of 23 September, CX383 to Zurich, CX880 to Los Angeles, and CX844 to New York-JFK. In addition, select flights departing Hong Kong on the morning and afternoon of 23 September have been cancelled, along with all flights arriving at and departing from Hong Kong between 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 23 September, and 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, 25 September.
The airline also warned that further flight delays and cancellations may be necessary over the next two days, depending on weather conditions and the typhoon’s path.
In addition to Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and several other carriers have also suspended flights to and from Hong Kong due to Super Typhoon Ragasa, sources said.
On cargo operations, Hactl’s Chief Executive, Wilson Kwong, told The STAT Trade Times that with the expected wind speeds, more airlines are likely to announce cancellations. He added that winds are expected to strengthen from the latter part of Tuesday. “As Hactl, I expect Super Typhoon Ragasa to impact cargo operations at Hong Kong, even though the airport remains open. We are currently preparing for the busy period ahead of the typhoon and planning the recovery process afterward.”
According to data from Rotate, the outbound cargo capacity from Hong Kong International Airport saw a steep decline within two days, falling from nearly 12,000 tonnes on 21 September 2025 to about 7,000 tonnes on 22 September 2025.
Super Typhoon Ragasa, with winds reaching 215 kph (134 mph) and gusts up to 295 kph (160 mph), made landfall on Calayan Island in Cagayan province, raising the risk of storm surges over three metres (nine feet), the state weather agency said, according to Reuters.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen quickly from Tuesday, with gale-to-storm-force winds hitting the densely populated city on Wednesday, and hurricane-force winds forecasted offshore and in elevated areas. Schools and numerous businesses will remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
