Air freight rates edged up a little further during the week to December 16, according to the latest data from TAC Index.

"The global Baltic Air Freight Index calculated by TAC was up another +0.8 percent, leaving it ahead by +0.5 percent from where it was at this time last year when there was a pronounced peak season spike. The data thus far matches expectations of a strong peak season this year, despite a rise in capacity and a lot of planning ahead this year by shippers and freight forwarders," says the latest update.

The index of outbound routes from Hong Kong edged up a further one percent WoW, though leaving it still lower by - four percent YoY. Outbound Shanghai slipped one percent WoW, but is still slightly ahead of last year at +0.7 percent YoY.

"Elsewhere out of Asia, price patterns were mixed with rates from Vietnam and India rising to the U.S. but a little lower to Europe. Rates to Europe from Bangkok and Seoul were both a little higher."

Rates out of Europe were generally higher again overall, including on lanes to China if not to Japan. "The index of outbound routes from Frankfurt added to recent big gains with a further rise of +1.8 percent WoW, leaving it ahead by +19.1 percent YoY. Outbound London Heathrow surged +12.9 percent WoW, led by higher rates to the U.S., leaving it ahead by +24.3 percent YoY."

From the Americas, the index of outbound routes from Chicago slipped two percent WoW to leave it at -14.1 percent YoY, the update added.
