December 18, 2019: Qatar Airways was recognised at the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) board of governors meeting held in Geneva on December 5, for its continued commitment to environmental management. Qatar Airways group chief executive Akbar Al Baker was presented with a certificate by Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of IATA, confirming the renewal of the airlines’ status under Stage 2 of IATA’s Environmental Assessment programme (IEnvA).

Notable to this achievement is that Qatar Airways has also extended the scope of its certification to be the most comprehensive in the industry, covering flight operations and corporate activities, as well as catering and cabin services, cargo operations and ground handling activities, and maintenance, repair and overhaul activities. Qatar Airways’ certification also acknowledges its success in meeting the industry standard for the prevention of illegal wildlife trafficking in aviation.

During the event, Al Baker said, “I am pleased to receive this certificate acknowledging the robustness of our systematic approach to environmental management. We remain committed to our drive for sustainability throughout our operations by promoting environmental leadership and awareness, and aligning to international standards like IEnvA.”

de Juniac said, “Congratulations to Qatar Airways for achieving the highest level of IEnvA certification. Sustainability in all aspects is essential for our industry and Qatar Airways has demonstrated significant leadership in the area of environmental management. The IATA Environmental Assessment Programme combines the latest operational expertise and standards to help airlines address environmental performance, and I hope more airlines will follow Qatar’s lead in pursuing certification.”

IATA’s IEnvA programme is a voluntary evaluation system designed to independently assess and improve the environmental management of airlines. IEnvA Stage 2 standards represent the highest level of IEnvA compliance and require an airline to demonstrate ongoing environmental performance improvement. Qatar Airways has been accredited to IEnvA Stage 2 since December 2017, and its comprehensive environmental management system provides the foundation for delivering continual improvement against its environmental policy and objectives.
