PANYNJ registers cargo growth in 3 airports and region

July 19, 2017: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) which operates a bunch of airports in and around NY and NJ has announced the cargo numbers for the month of May 2017. The four main airports operated are John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Stewart International Airport (SWF) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA). In addition to this, PANYNJ has more airports under Region.
While JFK, EWR, SWF recorded increase in cargo volumes, LGA has negative numbers for May 2017. However, Region also saw green in its cargo volume during the same period.
JFK’s total cargo traffic achieved a 11.9 percent increase (+12,578 tonnes). Domestic cargo grew by 12.3 percent - up 2,301 tonnes. And on year on year basis, the growth was 1.2 percent. International cargo, too, posted a double-digit gain of 11.8 percent, or 10,277 extra tonnes, y-o-y, it grew by 7.1 percent
EWR had a better performance in comparison to JFK. Total freight traffic achieved the second-highest growth rate among our airport system as it grew 12.3 percent (+ 7,427 tonnes). International cargo led with a 14-percent climb. Domestic cargo bounced back strongly from April's 0.1 percent dip as it grew by 11.4 percent.
LGA’s total cargo rose by 2.2 percent. This 14-tonne improvement was due to an 880 percent gain (+44 tonnes) in international cargo as domestic freight, which represents about 99 percent of LGA’s total freight, fell by 4.7 percent (-44 tonnes). However, on the y-o-y basis, both international and domestic declined, -7.7 percent and -1.2 percent respectively.
In SWF, the total freight activity at SWF expanded by a robust 23.2 percent – the highest growth rate among our airports. FedEx was the main contributor to SWF’s 308-tonnes gain, as it grew its cargo traffic by 23.2 percent. SWF accounts for less than 1 percent of the airport’s total cargo traffic
And in the region’s freight traffic continued its strong improvement trend in May with a 12.1 percent surge. This is the highest growth rate since November 2010 following the Great Recession of 2008- 2009. The international sector grew a robust 12.3 percent, or 13,353 added tonnes. Domestic cargo activity expanded by 11.7 percent, or 6,974 extra tonnes.
