Frankfurt, November 12, 2014 (STAT):-As the “airline for sport”, Lufthansa is continuing its involvement in football and has extended its partnership with the German Football Association (DFB) until 2018. Lufthansa will thus remain an official partner of the German Football Association. The corresponding agreement was signed in Frankfurt by Wolfgang Niersbach, President of the DFB, and Jens Bischof, member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board responsible for Sales, Product and Marketing.

As the official carrier, Lufthansa flies the players, trainers, staff and delegation members of the DFB-team to all of their international matches and tournaments. The national soccer team will travel with Lufthansa to France for the 2016 European Championship and to Russia for the 2018 World Cup - as well as the women’s soccer team for the World Cup in Canada next year.

The agreement guarantees Lufthansa extensive rights and marketing benefits from the DFB, such as the inclusion of logos on all DFB communication material, as well as content for the airline’s social media platforms. Lufthansa and the DFB are also planning joint initiatives with representatives and fans of the DFB.

A particular highlight of the previous agreement period was the national team’s flight to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the return flight with the Lufthansa Siegerflieger (winner’s plane) straight to the World Cup party in Berlin.

“Lufthansa is, and will remain, a reliable partner for sport. Our partnership with the German Football Association is an especially important one for us. Lufthansa is already looking forward to bringing the team back to Germany after the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup in Russia – hopefully as winners again in both cases,” said Jens Bischof at the signing of the agreement.

Wolfgang Niersbach, President of the DFB, added: “From the international matches played by our national first team, to the tournaments in which our national youth teams participate and the international deployments of our foreign experts, the DFB is active all over the world. In Lufthansa, we are delighted to have a reliable partner at our side, who knows what we require, is flexible and who identifies with German football. The picture of the “Siegerflieger” winner’s plane over the fan park at the return from Brazil of our World Champions was a lovely example of this partnership.”
