February 1, 2018: Nordic postal and logistics operator, PostNord will soon incorporate stat-of-the-art sorting technology from Lockheed Martin, according to a contract extension pact between two companies.

Lockheed Martin has been associated with PostNord for over a decade, supplying and supporting its automated sorting system. Based on the success of its performance trials, PostNord recently offered Lockheed Martin a contract extension, which will help upgrade PostNord's Gemensam Läs Plattform (GLP) system.

The upgrade comprises Lockheed Martin's next generation sortation platform (NGSP), a flexible business-rule driven workflow engine, which can bring significant cost benefits and increase flexibility to PostNord's operations across Sweden.

“Our automated sorting technology help companies in the postal sector to transform operations, improve efficiency and competitiveness of mounting e-commerce-based mail volumes,” said Emlyn Taylor, managing director of Lockheed Martin UK System Solutions.

“We are eager to extend our relationship with PostNord, and play a role in transforming the company’s delivery process to its customers.”

The contract extension, includes supply of Lockheed Martin's Minerva technology—a system powered with sophisticated artificial intelligence routines, which offers improved recognition performance for e-commerce packets.

Minerva is expected to enhance the ability of customers to process complex and rapidly changing mail stream, which currently poses a colossal challenge for postal operators across the globe.

“PostNord is happy to collaborate with Lockheed Martin on this solution, which will help us improve the processing of these items. We look forward to continuing this relationship to bring major improvements, while Minerva is developed,” said Christian Edfjäll, strategic system manager of PostNord.

Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin has over four decades of proven expertise as a leading postal and logistics operator, which offers innovative, cost-effective technology.

Lockheed Martin develops, deploys and maintains a range of complex solutions for Royal Mail, US Postal Service and Australia Post. Interestingly, more than a quarter of the world's letter mail is sorted with the help of Lockheed Martin recognition systems. Till date, Lockheed Martin has delivered over 500 mail and material handling systems, globally.
