July 19, 2017: Peru's tax and customs agency Sunat recently opened a new air cargo electronic monitoring facility to screen incoming and outgoing risk airfreight at Lima-based Jorge Chavez International Airport. The system has a special pallet scanner for non-invasive customs inspection. The volume of foreign trade cargo passing through Jorge Chavez Airport amounts to 810,000 tonnes a year, which is valued over $13 billion in international trade transactions.

Sunat continues to upgrade custom control mechanisms for the timely detection of potential threats, thus contributing to safe international trade. The new cargo control facility will reduce inspection times and physical inspection of traded goods. Likewise, it will help identify vulnerabilities in flows of people more accurately. The scanner which is worth $3.5 million was donated by the United States Embassy in Lima as part of bilateral customs cooperation efforts to strengthen the international supply chain security.
