FEB 11, 2015: Airfreight volumes at Dubai World Central (DWC) reached 758,000 tonnes in 2014 compared with 209,000 tonnes in 2013, following the shift of freighter aircraft operators from the older Dubai International airport (DXB).

Owner Dubai Airports added that the new UAE gateway also registered robust growth in the 2014 fourth quarter, with cargo volumes at 238,520 tonnes, up 278.4 per cent on the same period in 2013.

Chief executive of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, said the new airport had “played a critical role during the runway refurbishment programme at Dubai International” during the project.

He predicted: “The scale of DWC’s operations and the significance of its role will continue to grow in 2015, particularly as Dubai’s main hub for pure cargo operators, as airlines take advantage of the airport’s facilities, road feeder service to DXB and bonded link to the Jebel Ali port.”
