Frankfurt Airport cargo volumes edge up to 174,388 tonnes in August
Frankfurt Airport handles 174,388 tonnes of cargo in August 2025, up 1% year-on-year, with global trade lanes stable.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Europe’s busiest air cargo hub, processed 174,388 metric tonnes of cargo in August 2025, a 1.0 percent increase compared with August 2024, according to figures released by Fraport AG. When benchmarked against August 2019, volumes were 0.7 percent higher, underscoring the resilience of Frankfurt’s freight operations in a shifting global trade environment.
The steady growth in August highlights FRA’s ability to maintain its central role in international logistics, even during the summer season when passenger traffic usually takes precedence. The performance reflects consistent demand across pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, perishables, and e-commerce shipments—segments that continue to lean heavily on air freight for reliability and speed.
Operational activity supported the uptick in cargo. Aircraft movements climbed 6.4 percent year-on-year to 42,946 takeoffs and landings, while the total maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) reached 2.6 million metric tonnes, up 2.9 percent. Increased bellyhold capacity from passenger flights, alongside dedicated freighter operations, contributed to maintaining healthy cargo flows.
Frankfurt’s strategic location in the heart of Europe remains its competitive strength. The airport’s seamless integration with road and rail networks enhances its function as a multimodal logistics hub, ensuring uninterrupted supply chain connectivity across Europe and to global destinations.
While the August rise in cargo volumes appears modest, industry observers consider it a stabilising trend. After the extreme volatility seen in recent years, a positive year-on-year growth trajectory signals steady demand and a degree of normalisation in the market. For shippers and logistics providers, Frankfurt’s performance is a reassurance of both capacity and reliability in a challenging global trading climate.

Fraport AG highlighted that Frankfurt’s cargo growth is a key element of the Group’s overall performance, with the airport continuing to serve as one of Europe’s most important hubs for global supply chains. Located at the center of the continent, FRA offers extensive intermodal connections and remains a strategic gateway for industries dependent on time-critical shipments.
Looking ahead, the final quarter of 2025 will be closely watched as seasonal trade cycles, particularly e-commerce and year-end manufacturing demand, are expected to place additional pressure on air cargo networks. For Frankfurt, August’s 1 percent increase offers a measured but encouraging indication of resilience in the face of geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
