Nippon Express has been appointed as a designated cargo agent for the Tokyo metropolitan government's initiative to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in air cargo transport, which also aligns with corporate compliance to meet Scope 3 emissions requirements. As part of this initiative, Honda Motor has joined the programme as a shipper. Nippon Express and Honda have signed a basic transaction agreement, effective until January 31, 2025, under which Nippon Express will issue Honda a third-party-certified CO2 reduction certificate for its SAF usage, according to an official release from Nippon Express.

The agreement also includes measures to reduce Honda’s Scope 3 CO2 emissions. Nippon Express will continue supporting Honda’s environmental goals in air cargo transport as the company expands globally.

The NX Group has prioritised expanding the use of SAF as part of its efforts to develop and strengthen sustainable solutions. It offers customers the NX-GREEN SAF Programme and participates in ANA's SAF Flight Initiative. As part of its climate strategy, the group aims to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% from 2013 levels by 2030. In May 2023, it submitted a letter of commitment to seek certification under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), with a long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the release added.
