Amazon has started drone flights from its fulfilment centre in Darlington as it prepares to launch its Prime Air delivery service in the UK in 2026. The company said this marks a major step towards offering customers rapid parcel delivery by unmanned aircraft.

The flights use Amazon’s newest MK30 drone, which operates safely and autonomously with advanced detect-and-avoid technology to protect people, pets and property. Although deliveries are not yet being made, the northern English city is set to be the first location in the UK to host the service.

Prime Air is a drone delivery system designed to bring packages weighing up to about five pounds directly to customers’ doors in less than two hours. When the service begins, eligible Prime customers around Darlington will be able to opt in to drone delivery and choose from thousands of products, including everyday essentials, beauty items and office or technology supplies.

Amazon said the MK30 drone has received approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority to conduct operations and features multiple safety systems. As the drone descends for delivery, its onboard cameras and sensors can detect and avoid obstacles such as clotheslines and trampolines that may not appear on maps. The system continuously watches the airspace for other aircraft and can take evasive action if needed.

The company added that keeping noise low was a key part of developing the MK30, which it says is as quiet as an average delivery van. It also highlighted its work with Darlington Council and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the service meets high safety standards.

Prime Air flights are underway but the full delivery service is expected to begin later in 2026. Eligible customers will then be able to use drone delivery as an option through the Amazon app or website.
