Amidst high anticipation, MSC Air Cargo, the cargo airline subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has recently taken delivery of its fifth brand-new Boeing 777 freighter. Despite earlier expectations of receiving the fifth Boeing B777F by the end of Q1 2024, the delivery experienced delays, as per our previous report.

The addition of the B777F is significant for the cargo carrier, as the newest freighter will be operated under its Italian air operator’s licence (AOC), which the cargo airline acquired last year through the acquisition of Milan-based Italian all-cargo carrier AlisCargo Airlines. This acquisition strengthened MSC Air Cargo’s presence in the Italian market, providing it with a second European gateway situated in Milan.

With this newest freighter addition, the total number of Boeing 777 freighters in MSC’s fleet now amounts to five. MSC took delivery of the fourth B777F in the first week of January this year, delayed by more than a month. Delivery delays were due to disruptions in the global supply chain that impacted plane maker Boeing.

The four freighters in MSC’s fleet are operated by Atlas Air, an American cargo airline which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide.

“The receipt of this aircraft will enhance our efficiency and capabilities to better service our customers and trade lanes,’’ notes Jannie Davel, Senior Vice President of MSC Air Cargo.

The airline had launched its commercial operations in December 2022 from its European gateway at Liege in Belgium.
