Apr 20, 2017: Airports Council International (ACI) has recently published the top 20 rankings for the cargo airports for 2016 along with the preliminary world airport traffic rankings.

According to the data released by ACI, Doha (DOH) surprised the world with a stunning performance of double-digit growth. It registered 20.8 percent in air cargo volumes in 2016 and moved up from 20th to 16th rank. The world’s largest air cargo hub continued to be Hong Kong (HKG, +3.5 percent), followed by Memphis (MEM, +0.7 percent) and PVG (+5 percent). The total cargo handled by the world airports in 2016 grew 3.3 percent year-over-year.

The air cargo markets experienced a revival in the second half of 2016. Despite the looming uncertainty regarding trade policies in the face of protectionist sentiments, heightened business confidence through inventory build-ups and increased export orders remained apparent for the short-term.

In the passenger segment, the world’s busiest airport passenger traffic grew by 4.7 percent in 2016. The Top 20 airport handled 18 percent of the total global traffic. Atlanta- Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) retained its top ranking and handled 104 million passengers which are 2.6 percent higher than the previous year. Beijing (PEK) stood second and Dubai (DBX) in the third position.
