Volga-Dnepr transports two southern white rhinos from Israel to Russia

January 31, 2018: Volga-Dnepr Airlines recently delivered two southern white rhinos from the Zoological Center Ramat Gan, Israel to Russia using its modernised IL-76TD-90VD freighter.

The rhinos are expected to reside in one of the largest Russian zoos in Rostov-on-Don, which is involved in global initiatives towards preservation of rare and endangered animals.

Interestingly, its sister carrier, Atran Airlines recently transported rare and endangered Przhevalsky horses.

The IL-76TD-90VD freighter ensured correct temperature and maintained pressure environment during the transportation of the rhinos to Russia. The aircraft’s low-noise engines also contributed to the comfort of the rhinos during their journey. The rhinos were closely monitored by Israeli veterinary experts who travelled onboard the freighter as cargo attendants.

Commenting on the transportation, Gillad Goldstein, curator of the Israeli zoo said: “Everything went quite smoothly. The aircraft team were quite experienced and efficient.”

Alexander Zhadobin, director of the Zoo of Rostov-on-Don said: “In February 2017, we started negotiations on transferring the rhinoceroses, which included following recommendations of our Israeli colleagues and redesigning the rhinos’ enclosure. After arriving in Russia, they have been quarantined as they need adapt to their new conditions. We would like to thank Volga-Dnepr Airlines for their safe transportation.”

White rhinos are the second largest land mammals after elephants. Being natural inhabitants of Africa, southern white rhinos are on the verge of extinction.
