Feb 24, 2016: “As freight forwarders, we do less of forwarding and we are now being an integrated part of the customer,” said Sam Katgara, Partner, Jeena & Company, Past President of ACAAI & Past Chairman of FAPAA when asked about the changing role of service providers in the past decades.
Katgara was speaking at a panel discussion on the theme: ‘Freight forwarding – evolving paradigms and embracing global best practices’ on the second day of AIR CARGO INDIA, the biennial international conference cum exhibition being held at Grand Hyatt in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, another panelist, Keshav Tanna, Vice President, International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) cited two main factors that have changed the freight forwarder industry recently. He said, “Firstly, the integrators came to India and changed our service. Another factor is the advent of internet that has brought in transparency in supply chain operations.”
For Vishal Kashyap of DHL Global Forwarding, India, customisation has happened in the last decade. He explains that customers have become more informative. They go out to seek more information and every customer has now become a unique proposition in itself and customisation has to happen so that he is satisfied with what is provided through our services.
Hemant Bhatia, president of Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI), one of the attendees for the session raised one vital aspect which is the financing provided to the shipper. This, according to Bhatia, is one key change that has happened in the last few years.
Other panelists in the session were Peter Scholten, CEO, Fast Logistics Solution Group; Eric Hartmann, VP, Cargo Alliance, SkyTeam Cargo; Samir Shah, Chairman, Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Association of India (FFFAI) and Bharat Thakkar, Former President of ACAAI. The moderator for the session was Des Vertannes, Retired Air Cargo Executive & Former Global Head of Cargo, IATA.
