Sep 01, 2016: Lufthansa will fly the Paralympic team to Rio de Janeiro as the official airline of the German National Paralympic Committee (DBS). Flight LH 506 will take the 148 athletes together with 94 guides, trainers, doctors and advisers from Frankfurt directly to the venue of the Paralympic Games in Brazil.
President Joachim Gauck will together with the Hessian ministers Peter Beuth, Minister of the Interior, and Stefan Grüttner, Minister for Social Affairs and Integration, as well as Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG Carsten Spohr and DBS president Friedhelm Julius Beucher, bid a festive farewell to the German team at the boarding gate. Udo Schauss, Captain of the Boeing 747-8, and his crew are looking forward to welcoming the delegation on board.
“Flying the Paralympic team to the games in Brazil is a matter close to our hearts. As the ‘airline of sport’, Lufthansa has been promoting popular and professional-level sport for decades”, says Carsten Spohr, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “All Lufthansa employees wish the athletes a fair and exciting competition and will watch the games with excitement”.
Between 7 and 18 September, the German athletes will compete at the XV Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in disciplines such as swimming, athletics and new this year: canoeing and triathlon. “We are looking forward to the games in Rio and can’t wait for our Lufthansa flight to depart. Our long-time partner provides all comforts and conveniences to ensure that the team arrives safely in Rio,” said DBS president and head of the delegation, Friedhelm Julius Beucher.
Lufthansa has been a partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for many years. Traditionally, this has included transporting the German team to the Olympic Games and, as a partner of the German National Paralympic Committee (DBS), to the Paralympics. The airline is a national sponsor of the Deutsche Sporthilfe foundation and as such is engaged in promoting various popular sports. The airline has also been in cooperation with the German Football Association (DFB) and FC Bayern Munich for many years.
