May 10, 2017: Luxembourg airport registered exceptionally high growth in airfreight volumes in the first four months of 2017. It handled airfreight volumes of 286,000 tonnes. This is a 16.4% increase compared to the volumes during the same period in 2016. This growth rate exceeds the worldwide average of 14 % growth in the air cargo segment according to IATA's first quarter statistics of 2017.
The months of March and April saw excellent growth rates of 22.1% and 19.4% respectively, a growth rate that was not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. To cope with this increase, the construction of the four new cargo aircraft stands capable of accommodating the Boeing 747-8 Freighter has started at Luxembourg Airport. One stand is specially designed for the Antonov 124 aircraft. The first two stands will be available from April of 2018 followed by the rest in October of 2018. This new apron extension will be equipped with a hydrant refuelling system allowing faster and safer fuelling of freighter aircraft.
During the Air Cargo Europe exhibition in Munich, Lux-Airport has launched its brand new cargo video titled “My platform for logistics”. The video offers an exclusive view into the daily airfreight operations at Luxembourg Airport. The video was made with the cooperation of all airlines and authorities at Luxembourg Airport using a drone and a helicopter equipped with hi-definition camera’s resulting in the unique footage.
